The 4th of February marked world cancer day. To celebrate research in this field, UCD held an event in the conway institute. The day started off with a lunch in the foyer and was followed by a seminar which included a talk from Prof. John Crown, a consultant medical oncologist from St Vincent's University Hospital entitled " The Molecular Revolution in Cancer Therapy".
The Pennington group focuses research on prostate cancer in particular. One in every four males will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime and many die with the disease not because of it. Identifying changes during the early stages of prostate cancer could reduce deaths from the disease. To help doctors and patients make better treatment and quality of life decisions after prostate cancer diagnosis, we are developing more sophisticated, readily usable tests that measure multiple proteins in blood. These test results will indicate if the tumour has spread beyond the prostate gland.
